Which design makes less sense? Is it the double setup as seen below on this Camry? Seems like plenty of glass height for a full sweep if the motor was in the middle. Maybe they didn’t want the motor going through the glass or having the Toyota badge elsewhere was unthinkable.

Is it the asymmetrical design that I now know exists in the world and forever will hate !!!error: Indecipherable SUB-paragraph formatting!!! because of it? Why wouldn’t Ford just stick the 3rd brake light at the top? Wiper goes in the middle and gets a semi good sweep of at least the middle of the car.

Is it the Mini Clubman with it’s dual set for it’s dual doors? I think they should have just skipped the rear wipers.

My vote for the least useful rear wiper goes to the Lexus CT200H. The wiper cleans almost nothing.

What else is out there?

Cars that got a rear wiper standard in some markets but not available at all in others. The Honda Prelude is a good example.

Nothing particularly unusual-looking about the wiper itself, just that you couldn’t get one in the US.

There’s always this- the Disco II. Motor pivot behind the spare, with asymmetric sweep to favor the lower left corner. Which is bizarre, because while that’s the better corner to have clear in England, the tire location required putting the licen ce plate on that side too, which is *not* England-optimal. Also, unlike the Flex, because it’s a smaller sweep, the pivot location to get an offset-left wipe pattern is to the right instead of the left like you’d expect.

We have a CT200h, the wiper is small but it’s better than nothing.

The Mini makes sense. You can’t not have a wiper on a hatchback or rear door/s vehicle.

Very quickly you just wouldn’t be able to see out of it.

On the Skoda Superb it’s a not cost option on the liftback.

Some say it sticks out and looks unsightly but it’s practical.

While I agree with you that they are helpful, they aren’t a necessity. Every Astro, Suburban, Yukon, etc. with barn doors somehow did fine without a rear wiper.

The DS DS 5 (the car formerly known as Citroën DS5) has the most pathetic wipers ever. Just look at the amount of area it clears:

I guess that is what you get for putting a spoiler midway in the glass of a Crossover/MPV with a sloping roofline.

In the U.S. it may not be a legal requirement. But different markets have different legal requirements.

There are barn door vehicles in the U.K. without them but they tend to be vans or minibuses.

For me it is a necessity. Parking here with just side mirrors is more tricky without a clear rear window to look out of.
